A Guide on Fixing the ‘Grayed Out’ Settings on Windows 10

You might have noticed a few grayed out settings on Windows 10 that don’t allow you to turn on or off the feature in the Settings app. Your system is likely to flash the message ‘Some settings are managed by your organization.’ The question is, why does that happen? To answer your question, the message indicates that you have configured something installed or a Group Policy Object.

Stop worrying if you’re facing the same issue. In such a case, the error can be instantly resolved using the Group Policy Editor console. It enables you to undo changes due to which certain settings appear grayed out; therefore, allowing you to use the same.

Fixing the Grayed Out Settings on Windows 10

To fix the error that doesn’t allow you to enable or disable certain features in the Settings app, you can follow these steps:

  1. Tap on the ‘Start’ button.
  2. In the Search menu, find ‘gpedit.msc’ and hit the ‘Ok’ button.
  3. A Local Group Policy Editor console will open. Click on the ‘Computer Configuration’ option and then select the ‘Administrative Templates’ option from the left menu bar.
  4. Select the ‘All Settings’ option from the drop-down menu.
  5. Tap on the State column header to view the policies that have been configured.
  6. Locate the policy that is causing the setting to appear grayed out in the Settings app and double-click on the same.
  7. Mark the checkbox for the ‘Not Configured’ option in the top-left corner.

Note: if you want to keep a policy enabled or disabled, make the changes within the policy instead of using the Settings app.

  1. Tap on the ‘Apply’ button in the lower-right corner of the window.
  2. Next, hit the ‘Ok’ option.
  3. Now, again browse ‘User Configuration’ and then ‘Administrative Templates.’  Next, click on the ‘All Settings’ option from the drop-down menu.
  4. Tap on the State column header to view the policies that have been configured.
  5. Select the policy that is creating an error and click on the ‘Not Configured’ option.
  6. Hit the ‘Apply’ button and click ‘Ok.’

Once you’ve followed the instructions carefully, close all the windows and restart the Settings app. The error is likely to be fixed by now, and you can enable or disable any feature.

Notably, if the policy isn’t configured, the settings are grayed out. Try enabling and then turning off the policy to see if that works. If the error still appears, the feature in the Registry might be causing issues.
