Twitter is Reportedly Considering Adding a Dislike Button

Recently, Twitter started to roll out Fleets globally and introduced everyone with its new upcoming feature, Audio Spaces. With this announcement, Kayvon Beykpour – the product lead at Twitter, gave hints regarding the company’s possibilities of introducing a dislike button on Twitter.

The plans of Twitter were revealed by Beykpour while replying to the tweet of a cybersecurity expert who urged Twitter through his statement “focus on real problems.” He must be emphasizing the disinformation, harassment in the platform, and coordinated inauthentic behavior.

The Twitter handle @find_evil recently posted some real issues asking Twitter to focus on them. He stated that Twitter should first focus on real problems rather than developing a new feature. He emphasized improving user experiences for reporting and harassment. Further, he added that Twitter should focus more on removing the coordinated inauthentic behavior and should take action against those who spread disinformation to others with the platform’s help. Alongside all this, he suggested Twitter add some downvoting capability or a dislike button for the posts that are irrelevant or misleading.

In response to this Tweet, @kayvz stated that the team would look forward to serving the needs of the users. Starting with the Fleets related news, he informed that it is now available for everyone across Twitter. He posted that everything stated by @find_evil will be considered and will be worked upon as soon as possible. He said that even though the company is adding more features, adding a downvoting capability is a feature the company is laying more emphasis on.

This doesn’t mean that Twitter is planning to add a downvote button very soon. Users should know that adding a downvoting capability cannot be considered as a proper solution to every issue that is there on Twitter right now. In the follow-up tweet, Beykpour mentioned that the company is working on other incentives/disincentives.

Adding new features is useful for making the platform more responsive, but some of the features may have downsides. Much similar is the case with the dislikes or downvotes. Recently a Twitter user stated that the downvotes might get abused by some individuals on Twitter. However, at present, when you don’t want any specific content to be seen again, you report it to Twitter, and then the platform restricts showing you that type of content in the future.

Conclusion

So, this was all about the recently announced feature of Twitter and yeah, let us see how interesting the implementation of this feature becomes on Twitter without incentivizing the feature’s potential abuse. No precise timeline has been produced about when the feature will get added to the platform. We will have to wait for that announcement.
